Curious about art therapy?

Art therapy offers a gentle and creative way to explore life’s experiences.

What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy combines creative expression with psychotherapy to help people explore thoughts, emotions and experiences that can sometimes be difficult to put into words.

Do I need to be artistic?

Absolutely not! One of the most common concerns people have before starting art therapy is that they “can’t draw” or “aren’t creative enough”. The good news is that talent or skill has nothing to do with the therapeutic process.

Art therapy is not about creating beautiful artwork and it is not judged or assessed. It is about using colour, shape, texture and images to communicate thoughts and feelings that can exist beyond words. In fact, many people are surprised by how simple, spontaneous or even childlike their artwork appears. That is entirely normal.

Whether you haven’t picked up a paintbrush since primary school or you’re an experienced artist, art therapy welcomes you exactly as you are.

What happens in an art therapy session?

Each session begins with a conversation about what’s happening in your life before you’re guided to explore your experiences through a creative process. There is no right or wrong way to create – the focus is on using the creative process to explore thoughts, feelings and experiences in a safe and supportive environment.
